This invocation, shortly known as Basmala in Arabic, may be approximated to mean “In the name of Allah the Compassionate the Merciful”. In the Muslim Culture, it is supposed to be recited by Muslims when starting any action or task, for example when one is about to start eating or speaking. It is also invoked when one is about to start reading verses or chapters of the Holy Quran. It is also typically written at the head of letters.

It should be noted that many scholars oppose translating Basmala from its native Arabic language, in order to prevent loss of meaning.

The design is written in Muhaqqaq style (Muhakkak in modern Turkish), which is one of the main six pens (meaning types) of calligraphic Arabic scripts. The design follows a classic layout penned by the famous Muslim calligraphers over many years.

The design is surrounded by multiple borders of ebru or marbled paper by Istanbul’s master abru maker Hikmet Barutçugil.
